Questioning the Garner Report

Attended the special joint meeting of County Commissioners and City Council for the presentation of the Garner Report. This economic study, which cost the taxpayers $92,500, is heavily slanted towards industry, and among the recommendations is to eliminate the Special Use Permit, create a new layer of government to focus on economic development at the cost of $350,000 per year, hiring additional consultants at a minimum cost of $125,000, and raising the sales tax to create $32,000,000 to pay for all of the above.

The study did not include any significant consideration of the Film Industry or the Tourism Industry of New Hanover County, raising the question of what exactly does this study do, beyond supporting the increase of heavy industry and manufacturing in New Hanover County, with even less environmental oversight than we have now.
